Ding Repair Time

Someone wise once told us “I don’t get mad when I ding my boards anymore, I just look at it as a great excuse to drink beer and hang out in the garage”. We really couldn’t agree more with this positive outlook on a not so pleasant circumstance of surfing.
Ding Repair Trick Tip – Use a business card as a squeegee to fill in buckles or shape a contoured nose, tail, or rail. They are free, disposable, and sometimes work better than a stiff plastic squeegee to mold into the ding you are fixing. You can also make adjustments easier to shape the repair job (and keep your paws a little less sticky). Katin Surf Shop business cards always work best : )
Needs a few more coats, some heavy sanding, then a fine grit wetsand and BAM! You’re good to go!

The Ichiban inspiration. Sato Hughes

Hanging out in a surf shop for the better part of a decade or so, you might expect to hit a road block hear or there in the creativity department. While we may all fall victim to life’s daily circumstances and get burned out from time to time, sometimes all it takes is a clear mind and a look around your surroundings to find daily inspiration.
Case and point: Sato Hughes. Sato’s (Nancy Katin’s original seamstress for those who just showed up) work schedule finds her coming into the shop every day with the exception of Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sato takes her work very seriously and through the decade that I have spent at this shop I have picked up on a few things. The first being discipline. Sato wakes up every morning before sunrise and walks from her home in Seal Beach CA to the very end of Seal Beach pier and back. She then comes to work at opening (9AM) and diligently fills her orders. Did I mention she is eighty five years young?
This week Sato felt compelled to come in on her day off (as she often does) to complete a special order for Corduroy walk shorts. This was just one pair from the batch and let me tell you the photos don’t do these walkshorts justice. The quality and attention to detail is what makes these shorts stand out from any other brand. The craftsmanship and dedication Sato puts into each and every pair of custom trunks, or in this case walkshorts, is inspiring and an attribute I personally feel is invaluable. If you own a pair of custom Katin’s from Sato… Cherish them, because they were truly made with love and dedication. Strive to be the best at whatever it is you may do… It may sound cheeseball, but it’s true.
